ABSTRACT

Aulus Cornelius Celsus (BC 25-AD 50), an ancient Roman Latin writer and compiler of encyclopedias, has been known as the “Cicero of medicine”. Celsus spread a lot of Greek scientific knowledge in beautiful Latin, published a treatise on medicine in a popular and concise way. Celsus published a book called De Medicina, which opened the history of modern pathology. This book had strong practicability and made a clear distinction between food therapy, drug therapy and surgery, which had a systematic influence on the development of western medicine. Celsus put forword primary prevention and held the view of that diet was the definitive treatment. He also discussed the empiricism and rationalism of medicine, which focused on individualized treatment to achieve the best results.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of smoking on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) and respiratory symptoms. Methods A multi-stage, stratified cluster sampling strategy was used to select participants aged 40 or older in 5 surveillance points of Anhui Province. Questionnaires, body measurements and spirometry were used to collect data. Based on complex sampling design, Logistic regression model was conducted to analyze the effects of smoking on COPD and respiratory symptoms. Results The smokers who had smoked for ≥30 pack-years accounted for 13.9% (95% CI:10.3%-17.5%, P<0.001) of the total population. And the smokers who had smoked for ≥40 years accounted for 8.5% (95% CI:6.7%-10.3%, P<0.001) of the total population. On average, one smoker had smoked for 32.4 years (95% CI:31.2-33.5). Average daily cigarette consumption of daily smokers was 21.1 cigarettes (95% CI:19.6-22.7). As shown by multiple-variables Logistic regression analyses, the risk of COPD and respiratory symptoms increased with the increment of smoking pack-years and duration (all Ptrend <0.001). Conclusions Smoking was associated with COPD and respiratory symptoms. The risk of developing COPD and respiratory symptoms was greater with the increment of smoking pack-years and duration.

ABSTRACT

Hippocrates (460-370 BC) is a famous doctor in ancient Greece and the founder of Western medicine. He is a “landmark” in the long history of human medicine and is considered as the first epidemiologist in history. He created the “Four Body Fluids” theory of medicine, freeing human medicine from theology and entering the natural medical model; His hard work on Airs, Waters, and Places, laid the epidemiological ideological foundation for more than 2 000 years; He was praised for his noble medical ethics, and his “Hippocrates Oath” has been extolled to today; he and his disciples have integrated the masterpiece “Hippocrates Collection” and passed on a generation of doctors. Therefore, Hippocrates is now known as the western “father of medicine”.

ABSTRACT

Philippe Pinel (1745-1826) was a well-known French doctor and an outstanding mental health leader. Inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment, he adopted “moral therapy” for the increasing mental patients in France. He took the lead in scientifically and effectively alleviating the current state of mental illness with the concept of humanitarian care, liberated mental patients, and opened the door for the mental health. Through field observation and meticulous statistical analysis, he classified mental illness into a more comprehensive scientific classification, guiding the direction for identifying, treating, and preventing mental illness, thus laying the theoretical and practical foundation. Many of his achievements about mental health have been used to this day, and he was known as the father of modern psychiatry.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the demand for non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) services and related influencing factors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Liuzhou City, Guangxi Province. Methods MSM was recruited in Liuzhou City, Guangxi Province. Face-to-face survey was used to collect demographic information, knowledge about AIDS, history of high-risk behavior, knowledge and demand for nPEP services. 2 test was used to analyze the differences of demand for nPEP services among MSM with different characteristics and different high-risk behaviors. Log-binomial regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of demand for nPEP services. Prevalence ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated. Results 31.1% of MSM population had heard of nPEP service, and 61.6% of them needed the service after being informed of nPEP about its protective effect. 58.6% of MSM would spend money to buy nPEP service after high-risk behavior. Logistic regression analysis showed that the education level was university degree or above (PR=2.743, 95% CI: 1.996-3.450), the perception of the local MSM AIDS epidemic was not serious or unknown (PR=0.211, 95% CI: 0.112-0.294), and the number of temporary sexual partners in half a year was 2 or more (PR=3.642, 95% CI: 2.223-4.842), these subjects above were influencing factors of nPEP service demanded for respondents. Conclusions MSM population in Liuzhou area of Guangxi have a certain need for nPEP service. We should implement nPEP service as soon as possible in accordance with local conditions, and strengthen the corresponding propaganda to reduce the harm of AIDS to MSM population.

ABSTRACT

Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827), known as "Newton of France", was the founder of analytical probability theory, invented Laplace’s law and integrated celestial mechanics. He promoted the development of analytical probability theory, led classical probability theory to follow the world trend, and also laid a solid foundation for the emergence of modern probability theory. He actively extended the application of probability theory to the fields of decision-making theory and maritime insurance. Laplace's law was not only applied in the field of physics, but also in the field of medicine, especially in cardiovascular, urology, anorectal and other disciplines, which is crucial for the interpretation of clinical symptoms and the selection of treatment methods. Laplace also used calculus to explore classical mechanics, successfully explained Newton's legacy of multi-planetary interaction.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the influences of mental disorders on female systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)and analyze the factors. Methods We used symptom check list -90 (SCL-90) as a basis for judging mental disorders disease activity. Disease activity, social support and depreciation - discrimination were used as possible influencing factors. Social support and discomfort – discrimination were possible influencing factors. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of mental disorders. Results The total score of SCL-90 of patients with female SLE was significantly higher than that of norm models [(136.39±48.66) vs (129.96±38.76)] (P<0.05), in 289 SLE patients, the number of patients with mental disorders was 128 (44.3%). High monthly income(OR=0.770, 95% CI:0.604-0.981, P=0.034) was a protective factor for mental disorders. High disease activity (OR=1.792, 95% CI:1.023-3.138, P=0.042)and high discomfort–discrimination (OR=1.100, 95% CI:1.035-1.169, P=0.002)were risk factors for mental disorders. Conclusions Female SLE patients have a higher risk of mental disorders than the general population. And eliminating self-depreciation, reducing social discrimination, active employment, increasing monthly income, standardizing treatment and reducing disease activity may effectively alleviate mental disorders in SLE patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDGlaucoma is a major cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. There is evidence showing that a subset of the disease is genetically determined. In this study, we screened for mutations in chromosome 1q-linked open-angle glaucoma (GLC1A) in a Chinese family with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

METHODSA total of 23 members from five generations of a family were enrolled and underwent thorough ophthalmologic examinations. In addition, 200 unrelated healthy Chinese controls were also recruited as normal control. GLC1A gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequencing was performed to screen for mutations.

RESULTSSix members were diagnosed as POAG, with severe clinical manifestations, and history of high intraocular pressures. The mean age of disease onset was 26.3 years. However, the others were asymptomatic. In six affected and three asymptomatic members, gene sequencing revealed a mutation c.C1456T in exon 3 of myocilin gene (MYOC). Furthermore, we also identified a novel mutation c.G322A in beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 3 (B4GALT3) gene in all six affected and three asymptomatic members, which was not reported previously in POAG patients. The two newly identified variants were absent in other family members as well as controls.

CONCLUSIONThe mutations c.1456C < T (p.L486F) in MYOC and c.322G < A (p.V108I) in B4GALT3 are likely responsible for the pathogenesis of POAG in this family.

ABSTRACT

Major depression disorder is an increasing heavy burden in modem society, but its pathological mechanism is still vague. Recent evidence indicated that two pore potassium channel, TREK1, is one of the important drug targets of antidepressants. The structural and functional research progress of TREK1 potassium channel were reviewed with an emphasis on its roles in anti-depression, neuronal protection, and neuronal plasticity. The complicated interactions between TREK1 potassium channel and monoamine transmitters-receptors were also reviewed and future directions to explore the underline mechanism were also discussed.
